The drive is most likely formatted as FAT32 system.
In your case, the problem is the file system on the drive as opposed to how it is connected to your Mac. A file larger than 4GB can be created or stored on a FAT32. Note: if you try the formatting, the process will fail in the end with error: Logical Disk Manager: Volume size too big. If you want to format a volume larger than 32GB, use NTFS file system.
